Alcaraz beats Pouille in Umag debut
Carlo Alcaraz has gone a long way from being a young star to being one of the top players of his age. The Spanish star rallied from a set down for the second time in his ATP Tour run and beat Lucas Pouille at the Plava Laguna Croatia Open Umag.
While there are many hyped players in the contest, the NextGen ATP star is set to get his run going after his win over Lucas, who was a former top 10 player and now no. 103 in the ATP Rankings.
Carlo raised the bar and came back in the second set to close out the match at 3-6, 6-2, and 6-2. He did a lot of work to come back strong and make sure that he would win. This is a huge feat for a young star like him as a seventh seed in the competition.
‘I don't feel different being a seed, because I still come to these tournaments with the goal of growing and playing these kinds of matches’, Carlo said. ‘In the end, it's the matches that count and give you experience and that you learn from. I come to these tournaments to learn from the really great players’.
Carlo won 80% of his first serve points and he had three breaks en route to the win. He is now 7-5 on clay courts and he looks to make a huge run all the way to the final games of the season. This has been his mindset ever since.
The young star has taken his game to the next level, no doubt. This just means that there is a bright future ahead for him in this league. The ATP Tour has a lot of room for those stars like Carlo.
The Spaniard still has a lot of years ahead of him, which means that he will improve and rise as a star in the ATP Tour. He might be even able to reach the same level as his idol, Rafael Nadal.
It is too early to predict what he can bring to the table, but Carlo flourished in the past few months.
