Barbora Krejcikova emerges as the star of the French Open
Barbora Krejcikova was the star of this year’s French Open because she won not only the women’s singles but also won the doubles tournament alongside Katerina Siniakova. She became the first player to win both formats at the French Open since Mary Pierce’s 2000 run.
Barbora had an amazing run that became her breakthrough performance in the WTA Tour. This was her first singles Grand Slam title and her third doubles major trophy. Of course, this win was achieved without the presence of the top two players Ashleigh Barty and Naomi Osaka but that should dim the light of Barbora’s win.
After her two wins, Barbora talked about how she felt about what she achieved.
‘Right now after all of this happened, this last two weeks, the last two days, I feel really relieved and relaxed’, Barbora said. ‘I just know from now on I can really enjoy it because I have pretty much achieved everything I really wanted. Now I can just improve. That's the only thing I can do, just improving’.
In addition to her titles, Barbora and Katerina are once again the number one team in the world. Barbora beat Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the final on a 6-1, 2-6 and 6-4 scoreline. It was a stellar game since both stars were underdogs that made it to the final.
At only 25 years of age, Barbora has a bright future in the Tour. After the win, Barbora addressed how this is a magical moment for her. She said, ‘It’s something I’ve always dreamed about. Winning here my first grand slam doubles title [in 2018], then winning the mixed ones. Now, I was just telling myself it would be really nice if I could get a grand slam in all three categories. I cannot believe it, now it’s happening’.
The WTA Tour continues to be one of the best events in pro sports. In the past year, Iga Świątek was the rising star and in 2021, Barbora is the next woman up. With Barty and Osaka out for a long while, you can expect that the Tour will get even more competitive as time goes on.
