Matteo Berrettini talks about his loss in the Wimbledon final
In the Wimbledon final, Matteo Berrettini played against Novak Djokovic who eventually won the event. The Italian talked about how he lost the final series. He wanted to be the first Italian to reach and win Wimbledon but Novak was too much to handle for the 25-year-old.
Matteo lost in the final 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 6-4, and 6-4 to Novak which was a bad loss since he had a chance to win the match. This was the end of a stellar grass-court season for the Italian but Novak was too strong to beat. Matteo made sure to give credit to his opponent since Novak forced him to play badly with the pressure he put on the Italian.
After the final, Matteo said, ‘I mean, it’s been like a month on grass really, really great. I won Queen’s (Club Championships). I reached the finals here. Is something that, like I said after I won the semis, didn’t even dream about this because it was even too much’.
Matteo knows he did not play his best match which gives him positive thoughts for the future. It was a win that was meant for Novak since he tied his rivals Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer for the most Grand Slam wins with 20 apiece.
Matteo talked about how this is big for him. He said, ‘Obviously for me, it’s been an unbelievable week, two weeks. But I know that I can do it. I know that I can win this title. I’m not sure if I’m going to do it, but I know I can do it. So that’s what I’m going to do in the next weeks, in the next months and years: try to lift the trophy’.
Novak himself addressed Matteo as a big challenge after the final which will boost the Italian’s morale in the future for events like this Slam.
It should not be a shame for Matteo to lose to an all-time great who has won the previous two Grand Slams this year too. Matteo fought hard and made Novak work for the trophy but it wasn’t enough. However, he should be proud since he made the best player in the world do his best to beat him.
