Why Meppelink is seen as a leader in the volleyball world

The first FIVB Athletes’ Commission just had its first-ever elections. Madelein Meppelink was the winner and was named the leader of the commission for the next four years. Let’s talk about why she’s regarded as the best leader for volleyball players.

As an accomplished beach volleyball star, Meppelink is one of the best athletes that the sport has to offer. She is a two-time Summer Games player and European champion, and she was once considered the best player in the world. She is an excellent athlete and she also stands out as a proper leader amongst the players.

This is the first time that an athlete will have a spot in the FIVB Board of Administration. Meppelink will have a significant voice because she will have a say in what the FIVB decides for the future, she will be the players’ representative as she knows what they go through every day.

Meppelink is a natural leader

It’s not surprising that Meppelink was voted by her fellow players as their president. They know that through the years, the Dutch star is a consistently strong voice for the players. This is just the stamp for her role from before as the leader. When she got the nod, she talked about her new role in the FIVB as the Commission President.

She said, ‘I am honoured and humbled to be elected by my fellow colleagues at the FIVB Athletes’ Commission. I look forward to another productive term of the Commission which, after just one term, has proven its ability to best represent the voices of our fellow athletes. The work of the Commission has also been further strengthened with the introduction of elections, and we are excited for the future of the Commission and our incredible sport’.

The rest of the FIVB is pleased with this news because the Dutch star is a beloved figure. It will be a new era for the FIVB because they were criticized before when they didn’t take the athletes’ voices into account. Now, it is a big change for the sport because the athletes have a say in their schedules, and venues.

The FIVB is in good hands

As an elite athlete, Meppelink has always been on the right side of history. She is a successful player and a strong voice in the volleyball world. She is also primed to do even more in this new role as an outspoken star who can appear in the official FIVB meetings.

Meppelink will continue to compete in the beach circuit with her partner Sanne Keizer. They are ranked seventh in the world at the moment and they still want to climb the ladder. It will be a difficult task but they are capable. Meppelink herself has already reached the peak as a player since she was called the best player in the world before back in 2013.

From 2011 to 2017, Meppelink was a part of the athletes’ commission for the Dutch volleyball federation. She already has experience in linking players and the people in charge. This will be a good time for the rest of the FIVB because a player’s opinion matters. Meppelink will be the key piece towards a better volleyball scene since she will communicate with them as the number one person for the athletes.
