Patrick Mahomes’ Historic Three Seasons
Patrick Mahomes has just won the Super Bowl in his third season, becoming the youngest player to ever win the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player.
There have been only 13 men who have both won the regular-season Most Valuable Player award and the Super Bowl MVP. Mahomes is now part of that short list of legendary players and he is just 24 years old. He could retire now and still be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
He managed to play a limited amount of games in his first season, riding the bench for most of it. He only played 31 regular-season games in his rookie season, only starting one when the Kansas City Chiefs coaching staff decided to rest starter Alex Smith in the late stages of the season.
It was in the 2018 season where he broke out. The Chiefs traded Smith in the off-season, making Mahomes the full-time starting quarterback. He immediately put the rest of the league on notice with an amazing performance in the first game of the season against the Los Angeles Chargers.
In that game, he threw for 256 yards and got four touchdowns without interceptions. He was named the AFC Offensive Player of the Week because of that performance. In the following week, Mahomes broke the record for the most touchdown passes through a quarterback’s first three games.
He kept breaking records and winning awards in the 2018 season. This included the AFC Offensive Player of the Month and being named to the Pro Bowl. Above all else, the biggest award that he won in the season is the NFL Most Valuable Player. He became the first player from the Kansas Chiefs to be named the MVP.
He led the Chiefs to the AFC championship game, but they lost to the legendary Tom Brady and the New England Patriots in overtime 31-37.
Mahomes continued his stellar performance in the 2019 season, winning more awards. He led the Chiefs to 12-4 record, a first-round bye, and another division title for Kansas. The Chiefs beat the Houston Texans in the Divisional Round of the playoffs 51-31. They were down 0-24 in the early parts of the game, but Mahomes threw 321 yards and five touchdowns in their 51-7 run.
They advanced to the AFC Championship Game to go against the Tennesee Titans. Mahomes threw three touchdowns en route to a 35-24 victory and a Super Bowl berth.
In Super Bowl LIV, the Chiefs were down 10-20 against the San Francisco 49ers in the fourth quarter. Mahomes will then lead the Chiefs to an amazing 21-0 run and their first Super Bowl victory in 50 years. He was named the Super Bowl MVP.
Mahomes addressed his amazing career so far saying, ‘I’ve had a good start to my career. I’m in a great organization with great players around me. But I know it’s going to take a long time with consistency if I’m going to end where I want to end’.
In his two full seasons as a starter, Mahomes has created a career that is comparable to the greats. At just 24 years of age, people will get used to seeing Patrick Mahomes as the prime player to watch in the NFL. We are witnessing greatness.
