Leipzig Set to Battle Union Berlin to Start 2020 breaks down potential outcomes as Bundesliga leaders RB Leipzig is set to play Union Berlin in the league’s first game for 2020 after a long winter break that saw them holding down the top spot at the end of the year.

Leipzig was able to finish 2019 with a bang after coming off a dominant 3-1 win over Augsburg. The team has won four of their last five games and is hoping to come out with a strong start this year.

The team had 22 shot attempts in their impressive win over Augsburg. They had seven of those on target and was simply efficient on all sides of the field. They made 608 passes to account for 86% passing accuracy, along with 75% possession advantage.

Augsburg was limited to just six shot attempts and only had two of those on target. They only made 206 passes and had a passing accuracy of below 60%. The team was able to score first in the eighth minute of the game with Florian Niederlechner’s shot.

The team was able to defend through the first half and keep Leipzig at bay. Leipzig missed a lot of goals that time and seemed to be out of their normal pace.

Bet on upcoming Bundesliga games

The Bundesliga leaders came up with a big second half and hounded Augsburg’s goal from the opening of the half. The team caught their break when Konrad Laimer was able to drain the equaliser in the 68th minute of the game.

Leipzig did not stop there, Patrik Schick drained a goal in the 79th minute to give his team the lead. 10 minutes later, Yussuf Poulsen was able to slip in a goal in the bottom right corner to cap off a comeback win.

Meanwhile, Union Berlin dropped their last game of 2019 despite having 17 shot attempts in the game. They nearly had their hands on the win before Fortuna was able to drain a goal in the 90th minute that broke the tie that Michael Parensen hit to open the second half.

The team made 453 passes in the game. They also had 20 fouls that held Fortuna well in the earlier moments of the game. Union had a meltdown in the closing moments of the game - a stretch where their goal was hounded from that point until the end.

Erik Thommy’s goal in the 90th minute for Fortuna was the shot that took out Union Berlin’s hope. Union failed to put a shot up in the closing moments of the game and could not even budge through Fortuna’s timely defence.

With that being said, it seems that Leipzig seems to be en route to another easy win. The Bundesliga leaders have remained undefeated in their last five games, while Union has won only once and has lost two straight.

Considering that Leipzig would carry on the same momentum and level of play they had to end 2019, then there is a big chance that the team can come up with a clear victory.
