Digvesh Rathi: Writing Off One Wicket at a Time

Digvesh Rathi: Writing Off One Wicket at a Time

In a game brimming with stardom and flamboyance, few tales shine brighter than that of Digvesh Rathi the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) mystery spinner who’s become the talking point of IPL 2025. His tale isn’t one of a prodigy groomed from age-group cricket or fast-tracked through the system. Instead, it's the story of grit, grind, and guts. And yes, a bit of “notebook” flair too.

Rathi’s frugal economy rate of 7.75 and seven wickets in just five matches is impressive, but it's his attitude on the field that truly turns heads. With long flowing hair, a Sunil Narine-style run-up, and celebrations that echo the boldness of Wanindu Hasaranga and Kesrick Williams, Rathi has arrived writing his name, quite literally, one wicket at a time. Bhaiyya, Nahi Hua: The First Big Setback

Before the headlines and fines for over-the-top celebrations, a boy at Dronacharya Cricket Academy just wanted to spin a cricket ball.

Digvesh Rathi arrived at the Delhi-based academy in 2017, aged 17. Back then, he was just another offspinner with a standard action. “He bowled orthodox offspin. But even then, he had something about him,” recalls Sachin Shukla, his long-time coach. In his very first season, he bagged over 40 wickets in 14 matches for the club Delhi Blues.

But the road wasn’t smooth. When the Delhi U-19 squad was announced, Rathi’s name was missing. “He came to me, eyes red. ‘Bhaiyya, nahi hua,’ he said. It broke him,” Shukla remembers. Coming from a middle-class family, Rathi had everything to gain and everything to lose. “Jab poori family ka sapna tumse ho, toh yeh chhoti chhoti disappointments bohot bada lagta hai,” Shukla says.

From Collarbone to Comeback: Turning Pain into Purpose

Just when Rathi was looking to find his feet again, fate struck hard. A fractured collarbone while fielding sidelined him. But instead of wallowing in self-pity, Rathi turned the injury into an opportunity. He doubled down on his training and realised a harsh truth, being just another offspinner won’t get him noticed.

Inspired by Sunil Narine, whose photo he had set as his Facebook and WhatsApp display pictures, Rathi began reinventing himself. By 2020, he was no longer a conventional spinner. He began working on variations of a deadly carrom ball, a deceptive googly, and even a seam-up delivery. His bowling speed increased, and he developed a style of hiding the ball behind his back during his run-up. The transformation had begun.

The Lockdown Grind: Gym on the Terrace, Dreams in the Eyes

During the Covid-19 lockdown, when the world hit pause, Rathi pressed play. “People had excuses. Rathi had solutions,” Shukla beams. The young spinner set up a mini gym on his terrace, focused on core strength and endurance, and bowled endlessly into single stumps for hours.

“Six to seven hours, every day, ek hi stump pe bowling karta tha. Wicketkeeper thak jata tha, Rathi nahi,” laughs Shukla. That relentless pursuit shaped the bowler we see today, accurate, unreadable, and unyielding.

A Net Bowler’s Notebook: From DC to KKR to Narine

Despite being overlooked in the domestic circuit, the IPL franchises had taken note. Rathi was roped in as a net bowler for Delhi Capitals (DC) in 2022 and 2023. Later, he joined Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the same capacity. The KKR stint was particularly special, he got to meet and learn from his idol, Sunil Narine.

The experience was invaluable. Rathi absorbed every detail, how Narine gripped the ball, his release point, field placements, and more. It was also during this time that he picked up his now-infamous celebrations, mimicking the likes of Hasaranga and Kesrick Williams.

The DPL Breakthrough: South Delhi Superstarz and Sarandeep’s Wisdom

The real turning point, however, came in the 2024 Delhi Premier League (DPL), where Rathi played for the South Delhi Superstarz. Initially, there were challenges. He had never bowled with a Kookaburra ball before and was releasing it too fast. Sarandeep Singh, the former India offspinner and director of the Superstarz team, advised him to slow down a bit, focus on flight, and trust his wicket-taking skills.

The result? Rathi ended the DPL as the fourth-highest wicket-taker,14 wickets in 10 games at 7.82 economy. Sarandeep, impressed with his composure and discipline, pushed for his inclusion in Delhi’s domestic side. Two months later, Rathi debuted in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

“Uske jaise grounded aur hardworking players Delhi mein rare hain,” Sarandeep says. “He doesn’t show off, trains alone, and bowls until he drops.”

IPL 2025: The LSG Leap and the 'Notebook' Saga

Lucknow Super Giants took a leap of faith during the 2025 mega auction and picked Rathi in their squad. The move paid off. With 7 wickets in just 5 games and an economy of 7.75, Rathi has already outshone more experienced bowlers, including Ravi Bishnoi.

The standout stat? Of the 120 balls he's bowled, 44 have been dots. Among spinners, only Varun Chakravarthy has more (49). Rathi has also conceded only three sixes, the fewest among spinners who’ve bowled at least 15 overs.

But it's not just the numbers; it's the style. His now-iconic “notebook celebration” (which has earned him two fines and three demerit points) is as much a part of his identity as his bowling. Against Mumbai Indians, after dismissing Naman Dhir, Rathi whipped out his imaginary notebook and added a wicket. Cricket Twitter went wild. The umpires? Not so much.

Celebrations, Fines, and Friends: What’s the Real Story?

So, what explains the exaggerated celebrations? “Yeh uska expression hai,” says coach Shukla. “He’s been doing these for years, even during academy matches.”

Against Punjab Kings, Rathi made physical contact with Priyansh Arya after a wicket, earning another reprimand. But there’s more to the story. “Priyansh aur Digvesh bohot ache dost hain,” says Shukla. “Woh celebration bas mazaak mein tha.”

Shukla admits he’s tried to convince Rathi to create his own unique celebration. “Main kehta hoon, ek naya celebration bana, sab tujhe yaad rakhenge. But he laughs and says, ‘Bhaiyya, abhi chalne do.’”

Learning Curve Ahead: The Real Test Begins

While Rathi has become a sensation, his mentors know the journey ahead won’t be easy. “Right now, not many have seen his variations. But once batters start reading him, he’ll have to adapt,” says Sarandeep.

Unlike most IPL stars, Rathi didn’t come through U-19, U-23, or even the Ranji Trophy. His jump from corporate leagues to Delhi domestic to IPL has been meteoric. But the real challenge lies ahead: consistency, reinvention, and resilience.

“Woh seekhne ke mood mein hai. That’s his biggest asset,” Sarandeep says.

Digvesh Rathi: The Spin Wizard Delhi Never Knew it Needed

In a city bursting with talent and egos, Rathi’s simplicity stands out. No media drama, no Instagram flex. Just a boy who loves bowling.

LSG head coach Justin Langer said it best: “If he could bowl for 16 hours a day, he would bowl for 16 hours a day.”

Rathi is proof that not every star needs an elite academy background or BCCI’s junior system backing. Some stars shine brightest because they’re forged in the fires of rejection, self-belief, and relentless hustle.

With each spell, Rathi isn’t just adding wickets to his tally—he’s crafting a story. One of hard work over hype, of celebrations over cynicism, and of raw, unfiltered passion.

Notebook kholne ka waqt aa gaya hai. Because Digvesh Rathi is here, and he’s writing off one batter at a time.
