Racism in Cricket

What is racism?
When someone is treated less favorably than another person in a similar circumstance due to their race, color, descent, national or ethnic origin, or immigration status, this is referred to as racial discrimination.
When discrimination occurs, people are sometimes treated unfairly in overt ways. For instance, a bus or taxi driver can decline to take a customer because of their race or skin tone. 'Direct discrimination' is the term used to describe this.
Sometimes a regulation or policy that applies to everyone but has an unjust impact on people of a certain race, color, religion, or origin is the source of discrimination. For instance, if a sporting organization has a regulation prohibiting headgear on the pitch, this may unfairly disadvantage individuals from certain racial or ethnic groups. This is an example of indirect discrimination

What’s happening in the world of cricket?
Cricket has a long lasting ghost of racism, troubling players of different nationalities. There are tons of experiences that go unreported in the world of sports.
Majid Haq and Qasim Sheikh, two international cricket players from Scotland, have both accused the sport of institutional racism and said it has negatively impacted their careers. Their charges were in response to the Yorkshire Cricket Club racism crisis, which also involved former player Azeem Rafiq's claims of racism there.
Cricket Scotland had this to say: "Neither sport nor society should tolerate racism. It is a stain on cricket, and Cricket Scotland is fully committed to doing everything in our power, along with our partners, to banish racism from our sport.
Cricket Scotland is unable to comment further because this incident is currently part of an ongoing investigation. However, the governing body can attest that it is collaborating with the Greenock Cricket Club, Western District Cricket Union, and CSMOA [Cricket Scotland Match Officials Association] to make sure internal disciplinary actions are taken promptly and properly while adhering to the law.
Study of Racism in cricket
The Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket in England received testimony from more than 4,000 people, and its findings were as follows:
• Discrimination is experienced by 50% of respondents;
• Cricket is saturated with racism;
• Women are oppressed and frequently encounter sexism;
• The lack of attention paid to removing class boundaries;
• The complaint systems are unclear and ineffective;
• There is a critical need for progress in equity, diversity, and inclusion.
Therefore, where does racism exist, and how is it practiced?
Inappropriate language that, in some instances, would be labeled racist but is instead just "banter."
Concern that sledging is being used as a pretext to discriminate against opposing players.
lack of awareness of how language and behavior affect people.
Procedures that are inadequate for reporting racism on and off the pitch.
In other cases, there is a lack of willingness to address discriminatory incidents.
Lack of diversity among the game's umpires, coaches, and players.
Ben Stokes opens up about how racism is not welcomed in cricket.
"As a sport, we must learn from our previous errors and do everything in our power to encourage individuals to feel secure and to be themselves at all times. Since joining the England team in 2011, I have had the good fortune to play on some really diverse teams. I also enjoy how each player has a unique backstory. We need to do more to be more varied and inclusive so that everyone can enjoy the game they love without having to worry about being judged or discriminated against because of their background, ethnicity, or gender.”
“I am sincerely sorry to hear of the instances where participants in the game have previously felt uncomfortable or unaccepted. Cricket is a sport that needs to embrace diversity on all levels because it wouldn't be where it is today without it. It is obvious that the game needs to improve greatly, and as players, we want to do our part to make sure that this is a sport that is enjoyed by all.”
Meanwhile, in India, how does differentiation happen?
The bulk of Indian cricket supporters are incensed at the mere insinuation that there might be caste-based prejudice whenever there is a discussion about it. They want to think that society as a whole has no impact on the sport. In fact, there is very little prejudice at the highest level because everyone values excellent performers.
This is where racism based on skin color is less pernicious than the caste system. It is difficult to look at the national team of India and claim that it is not representative, even though throughout its history, India has only ever fielded a small number of players from the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, which make up around a fourth of the country's population. Only players from OBC (Other Backward Castes) regularly make it to the national squad. Indian youth are taught about caste in school. When they become privileged adults, they shelter their children and themselves from this unpleasant topic.
