Most popular J1 League teams to bet on in Japan

Soccer is considered the world’s biggest sport. It’s not a surprise that it has reached Japan which is why we’re looking into the top teams in the J1 League. Despite baseball being massive in the country, you can expect soccer to grow because of this league.
Japan is known for its dedication to certain sports like martial arts and baseball but soccer is quickly climbing the ladder as a popular sport. The J1 League is the top division of Japan’s Professional Football League system. When it comes to association football in Asia, the J1 is probably the biggest league besides China.
The J1 was launched back in 1992 replacing the Japan Soccer League. Before the J1, the JSL was composed of amateur clubs that managed to draw a large number of fans. Soccer’s boom period was back in the late 1960s and early 1970s which included a bronze Summer Games medal in 1968.
With the J1’s launch, eight clubs were drawn from the JSL, one from the Second Division, and at the time, a new club, Shimizu S-Pulse. With those 10 teams, the J1 was born and it started to serve as Japan’s top-flight league.
At the time, the J1 was met with excitement. Matchdays were always filled with around 19,000 people in the stadiums but this declined as time went on. Notably, Arsenal coaching legend Arsene Wenger was in the J1 in this era as he coached Nagoya Grampus Eight.
The J1 format
As of the 2021 season of the J1, the league has 20 teams. However, this will change in 2022 with their decision to revert back to an 18-club system. This 18-season format was around for 15 years before the J1 favoured a 20-team system. However, since they didn’t like what they were seeing with the new system, the 2022 season will revert to the classic format.
Just like most association football leagues, the J1 is reliant on a point system. With the 20-team system, every team would play 38 games in a season but that will be lessened to 36. This means that each team will have to play each other two times throughout the season.
With a win, a team will get three points. When they get a draw, both teams will earn a point apiece in the J1 league table. Let’s take a look at some of the teams in the J1 League crop that you should look into and the reasons why they are good choices to bet on.

Popular J1 League teams
Kawasaki Frontale
If you look at recent history, the J1 is dominated by Kawasaki Frontale. Ever since head coach Toru Oniki took over, the club has been the strongest in the J1. Since he was hired, Frontale has only lost the J1 one time, which was back in 2019. They have four J1 trophies to their name and they have all come under Toru’s guidance.
While the head coach deserves credit for how they are performing, the players themselves are solid as well. Yū Kobayashi is their star player and he has proven himself as a star ever since he signed with the team back in 2010.
Yū is not the only star on the team because you can list down so many players from the club’s roster. Brazilian forward Leandro Damião also deserves a mention because he was Frontale’s top scorer in the 2021 season. Damião and Kaoru Mitoma are solid players to serve as the team’s stars on offence to pair with Yū.
If you want to have a club that always tops the J1 League standings, Frontale is a good choice if you want to win. The trends over the past few years are in Frontale’s favour but anything can happen in the J1.
Yokohama F. Marinos
Before the J1, Yokohama F. Marinos was already playing in the top-flight of Japanese soccer. They are the longest-tenured team in the top-flight as they have played at that level since 1982. Marinos is one of the only two clubs that have competed in Japan’s top-flight every year since its inception.
The club has had its fair share of success in the J1 as they are four-time champs with the most recent coming in 2019 in the middle of the Frontale era. They are always a consistent team in the J1’s upper echelon which makes them a solid choice if you want to make your bets.
In terms of reliability on betting, you should look at Marinos as a top choice since they always step up when needed.
During the 2021 season, Daizen Maeda was one of the most impressive players in the league. The team is an offensive powerhouse which makes them a solid choice since they can outscore the opponents on any given night.
Kashima Antlers
Just like the Marinos, Kashima Antlers is the second club that has remained in Japan’s top-flight since 1982. Kashina is the most successful club in J1 history with eight wins. They have a total of 19 domestic trophies which is amazing considering that soccer is not as popular in Japan.
In the 2021 season, Kashima finished fourth in the J1 League standings. This was a down year for the club but you can expect them to bounce back. Their fans are patiently waiting to win again especially since their last J1 trophy was back in 2016.
In terms of their most reliable players, you can expect both Ayase Ueda and Ryotaro Araki to step up when needed. If you’re looking for reasons to bet on this historically successful team, you can look at the potential of those youngsters as the two long-term stalwarts.
Nagoya Grampus Eight
Nagoya just came back to the J1 in 2017 but it is arguably the most historically important team in the league. The club was founded back in 1939 as Toyota Motor SC and it got its current namesake back in 1991.
They have one J1 trophy under their belt back in 2019. They have been successful over the years but at the same time, they struggle with consistency. They can become J1 champs but they can quickly fall out of the league and into the J2 too.
The club was mostly known for Wenger’s stint in the 1990s before he went to Arsenal. While that was a solid achievement, Nagoya is more than Wenger’s impact. The club has been successful without an international star head coach and that is why they should be considered as a good bet. If you look at the J1 League table over the years, they are improving and that trend should convince you to bet on them.

Vissel Kobe
While they are not seen as a top contender every year, Vissel Kobe is on a good trajectory. They finished third in the 2021 campaign and with so many good players, Vissel wants to constantly improve.
If you want a consistent team that plays an exciting brand of soccer, Vissel is the one for you. It also helps that their captain is Barça legend Andrés Iniesta.
He is the biggest reason why people know about Japanese soccer outside of the country. However, that should mean that the rest of the team is solid as well. If you are looking for a dark horse team to bet on, Vissel is a good choice. They will pull off surprises in the J1 and you will be smart to choose them as a betting option.
Urawa Red Diamonds
Urawa Red Diamonds is not usually the club that performs at the highest level every season but they can be dark horses when they’re on their ‘A+ Game’. Their peak was back in the mid-2000s when they won the J1 in 2006. They haven’t been a top team since then but they had some flashes including the 2016 season.
If you want a team that can pull off some surprising runs and wins, Urawa is a solid choice. It will be hard to win but you can expect this team to compete.
Cerezo Osaka
Cerezo Osaka is usually a middle-of-the-road team but you can expect them to compete every year in the J1. This club is always in the mix at the middle of the J1 League table but they could go to battle in the top four race. That is big for a team that is typically seen in the middle of the J1 League standings.
This club never falls too low to be unreliable which is a perfect reason for its status as a solid betting option. They can become a top team with their roster construction and with a supportive group behind them, you can expect success from the club. It will have to pass through some hoops like the other top teams but the potential is there.
Sanfrecce Hiroshima
In recent years, Sanfrecce Hiroshima has functioned like Cerezo Osaka in the middle of the table but this team will only improve due to the promising talents. They already reached the pinnacle of Japanese soccer in the past with three league titles in the mid-2010s.
This team will surely be a good choice in the future if you want to bet on a team that is not expected to be at the top. They are a popular choice because this club will be successful if they continue to develop top talents and keep their well-oiled machine going.
FC Tokyo
As the club that has the capital city’s name, FC Tokyo is strong in the cup competitions but they haven’t won the top prize yet. They experienced relegation to the J2 but their consistency has helped them compete at the top-flight again.
They are hard to bet on at times but they have good potential. If you want to have a surprise team to bet on, FC Tokyo might be a solid choice for you.
Gamba Osaka
With solid achievements in their past, Gamba Osaka is always a sleeping giant. They can wake up at any time and turn into a championship-level team which is why they can become top betting options.
Gamba will be a good choice since they have proven that they can win titles in the past. They have two J1 trophies in their cabinet and are looking to add more.
J1 will only get better
These are just some of the biggest teams in the J1 but you can expect more. The league changes every year and one team might surprise everyone. Most of the time, the J1 puts all of the teams on an equal platform. Hopefully, you can have fun with your bets and win solid rewards. If you’re asking when does J1 League start, you should expect every season to start every February.
