How to bet on blackjack
Betting on blackjack is more than just placing your bets; you need to understand some basic actions. First things first: be sure of your bankroll and check if there is a minimum bet for the game.
Are you ready? Now let’s place your bets and begin. Once the cards are dealt, there are usually five actions you can take:
Hit: taking a free card
Stand: not taking any more cards
Double Down: Doubling your bet and receiving just one more card, after which you have to stand.
Split: If you have a pair, you can pay an extra bet equal to your starting wager and split the hand into two (one card for each). You’ll then receive two extra cards before the game proceeds.
Surrender: folding your cards due to a low score
Based on what the score of yours and the dealers cards are, this is where you should have a basic idea of what to do.
If the dealer has a 9, 10, J, Q, K or A and you have a score of 16 or lower, you may want to surrender as your chances of winning are low.
If you have a pair of Aces, you should split as the ace is worth either 1 or 11, making it an incredibly versatile card. By splitting, you’ll have two hands with the most versatile card in the game. You should also split a pair of 8s.
If your card score is 17 or higher, it’s advisable to stand. While 17 may not guarantee a win, you may go bust if you hit on it and lose as a bust means an automatic lose.
Besides the main bet, some games offer side bets such as betting on whether the dealer will hit blackjack. Also known as insurance, you may want to know that many experts do not recommend betting on this.
Blackjack payouts and odds
There are two things you should take note of when it comes to payouts and odds for online blackjack: RTP and volatility. RTP is the percentage of all wagered money that a casino game pays back to its players over time, which will give you an idea of how much you could possibly win. Volatility simply means how much risk is involved so casino games with higher volatility mean lower chances of winning with higher payouts, and vice versa for low volatility games.
In most casinos, be it land or online, blackjack is said to give you the best odds of winning as the house percentage is just 1. To get the house percentage, what you want to do is subtract the RTP from 100%. For example, a game with 99.3% RTP will have a house edge of 0.7%.
Payouts for blackjack are pretty much the same as everywhere else. Wins are paid 1:1, and most games pay 3 to 2 if you hit blackjack, meaning you get $3 for every $2 wager that you make.

Betting tips for blackjack
To ensure you have a fun and responsible gameplay, we’ve got a few tips for you before you’re on your way!
Know when to hit or stand
Hit if you have 8 or less, or if you have 12-16 and the dealer has an ace or 7 and above. Stand if you have 12 to 16 and the dealer’s score is between 2 to 6.
Double down only if you’re confident
Double down lets you increase your winnings by 100%, but this should only be done if you’re confident with the cards you’re holding or you perceive enough weakness in the dealer’s cards. The skill to tell comes with practice!
Play responsibly
Always check your bankroll when playing and never play more than you can lose. At Sportsbet Casino, we encourage responsible gambling so it’s important you know when to walk away.
